I could write a book on digital marketing but I’m not because by the time I finish the book the whole system will have evolved. Instead, I decided that I would break this down into pieces and parts, essentially writing a series of blogs on this one topic. So hop on the train and let’s start at the beginning and answer the question, exactly what is digital marketing? According to Wikipedia, it is “the marketing of products and services using digital technologies, mainly on the internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital mediums.” Got that? Clear as mud, huh?
Let’s explore this a little differently. Digital marketing is simply a form of advertising that can be executed through search engines like Google (is Bing still a thing?), social media, websites, email, and mobile apps. What makes digital marketing so intimidating is that it isn’t perceived to be as tangible as traditional advertising like TV, radio, or print because there is so much that happens behind the scenes. And, oftentimes you’ll hear someone say “you have to have SEO and SEM or else no one will find your website” or “your website is out of date so you won’t be in favor of the Google Gods.” I imagine you’re looking like this right about now because you’ve heard all this before and just don’t know where to start or who to trust.
As a business owner can you do this on your own? Sure, but this is one where I’ll stand up and say leave it to the experts because each form of digital advertising has its own complexities and it is truly not worth the headache to go at it alone. Digital marketing is changing and evolving daily and by the time you’ll think you have it figured out, it will change. Again, I know you’ve got your hands on your hips thinking I’m crazy but trust me on this one. Save yourself the time and trouble. What you want is a trusted knowledgeable digital marketing partner. Someone that understands digital strategy, the ins and outs of website development, social media content development, and knows what sacrifices have to be made to the Google Gods so you show up organically. A clear understanding of social media advertising, search engine marketing, email marketing, interpretation of metrics and analytics, and how to determine ROI are also important.
